Vision & Academic approach
About us
The Spanish School is part of Flamingo Coworking, a tropical hub on the Caribbean Coast of Colombia. With shared offices, classrooms and meeting rooms, the best internet connection in Santa Marta and large communal areas specially designed for professionals on the move, it is a perfect environment to learn Spanish!
Vision: We want to be the best alternative for learning Spanish in Santa Marta by providing an excellent atmosphere for learning and studying as well as for meeting and mingling with new friends.
Academic approach: The educational approach is based on the principles of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Communicative Language Teaching is the approach to teaching a foreign language with the emphasis interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of learning a language.
CLT focuses on the following competence objectives:
- linguistic competence (knowledge of grammar and vocabulary)
- sociolinguistic competence (ability to say the appropriate thing in a social situation)
- discourse competence (ability to start, enter, contribute to, or end a conversation)
- strategic competence (ability to communicate effectively and repair problems in the communication)
CLT methodologies are based on activities that require exchanging information and solving problems, communication activities with “real-world” situations, and by taking into account the learner’s background, needs and goals.

Courses & Methodology
⚠️ Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we only offer private lessons with individual or friends and family groups. ⚠️
Target group: Travellers that want to be able to communicate Spanish on a basic level, not aspire to learn the language profoundly, just enough to handle regular travel situations.
Objective: Give the student a set of phrases to use in social settings such as traveling, eating and drinking at bars/restaurants/hotels or meeting people.
Course structure: 2 classes per week; Monday through Wednesday from 4.30pm to 7.00pm or Saturday from 9.00am to 1.00pm, Sunday from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. Total of 8h. (Max 8 students per class)
Course Material: Included in the course fee is a Booklet with relevant tasks and texts for the student to keep. The material is based on the Book “Enlace” which is developed by CEPEX de la Universidad Externado de Colombia.
Social activity: During the week, there are always social gatherings or events. A dance class, an excursion up to a village in the nearby mountains, a pub crawl or a day at the beach.

The course structure and levels are following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR 1). During the 4 weeks, the course covers level A1 and B2 defined by CEFR.
Target group: Students who want to learn Spanish in a longer time, who want to establish a profound basis for further learning, focusing on both speaking and reading skills, as well as developing an understanding of the grammatical structure for further studies.
Objective: Give the student a solid foundation and understanding of the Spanish language. A basis for further studies at Flamingo or other schools. Since we are following international levels and teaching principals, the student will be able to continue any given school/academy that follows the same standards.
Modules and structure: The program consists of 4 modules, each module has 4 hours x 5 days – a total of 20 hours per week. The student would enter the appropriate level based on a placement test. The student can choose the join for 1, 2, 3 or all 4 weeks; max 8 students per class.
Entry test: Students that want to join the classes who have some previous knowledge of Spanish must complete a short test to determine their level; this is important to be able to assign into the right level, to ensure that they get the most out of the class.
Course Material: Included in the course fee is a Booklet with relevant tasks and texts for the student to keep. Each week has a separate booklet. There is also a separate book with grammar and tasks available to buy. The material is based on the book “Enlace” which is developed by CEPEX de la Universidad Externado de Colombia
Social activity: During the week, there are always social gatherings or events. A dance class, an excursion up to a village in the nearby mountains, a bar crawl or a day at the beach.

Testimonials
I enrolled one of the Spanish courses Flamingo Coworking has. I had Paola as a teacher and she was excellent and very patient. I learned a lot and I feel that my Spanish has improved a lot in just 5 days. I would recommence one of the courses for anyone who wants to better their Spanish.
It wouldn’t be a complete review without mentioning Paola who was my Spanish teacher while I was at Flamingo. She’s a legend! We had a few really cool, authentic experiences with her so if you get the chance I’d check to see if she’s running any when you’re there.
I got lessons of Paula who greatly helped me to improve my Spanish. I’d recommend Flamingo to anyone who wants to go to a coworking spot in Santa Marta.
